Getting Crafty – Butterflies
Hello! And welcome back to Getting Crafty with Citadel Arts.
As we are going to be spending some time indoors overs the next few weeks, we thought it would be nice if we could ‘Bring the Outdoors In’, so everyday this week we are going to be creating something different to go in our very own indoor garden.
Today we are going to be creating a base for our indoor garden and some very simple but effective butterflies. For this task you are going to need:
FOR THE BASE
4/5 x sheets of green paper
1 x empty cereal box
FOR THE BUTTERFLIES
1 x cardboard toilet roll tube
1 x sheet of coloured paper
1 x sheet of coloured card
Have a watch of the video below and follow the step by step guide to have a go at creating your own.
We’d love to see all of your amazing creations when you’ve finished so please upload a picture to our facebook page.
TO CREATE THE BASE
Lay your empty cereal box down and use your green paper to cover the top of the box. It may take a couple of pieces to cover, depending on the size of your box.
Now the top of your box is covered we need to cover the sides. To do this take a sheet of green paper, fold in half and glue so it holds together.
Using your scissors, cut a grass pattern into your folded piece of paper. Don’t cut too far down the paper, half way should be fine.
Now that you have your grass, you can glue the bottom of your piece of paper and stick it to the side of your box.
Repeat the process until you have grass all the way around your box and then you will have an indoor garden for us to put all of our wonderful creations into.
Take a picture of you fab garden and upload it our facebook page
TO CREATE THE BUTTERFLIES
Take you empty toilet tube roll it up in the coloured paper to cover the tube. Use your glue stick to stick the paper in place.
Using your scissors cut two slits at both ends of your paper so that we can fold the excess paper inside the tube.
Cut your sheet of coloured card in half – to help with this, fold the card in half and cut along the crease.
Take half of our coloured sheet of card and fold this in half once more. Use your covered toilet roll tube to make a mark on this sheet, so we can measure how big our wings need to be. Then use your scissors to cut your piece of card to the correct length.
Keep the remaining card folded cut out the pattern of one side of your wings – make sure you sure you cut on the folded side so that when we open them up we have a full set of wings.
Glue along the paper crease on your covered toilet roll tube and stick firmly to the centre of your butterfly wings.
Using the remaining cardboard, cut out two antennae and stick these firmly into place inside your tube. Now you will have your simple but effective butterfly.
Now you’ve made one butterfly, why stop there? You can make one using any colour you like, or one with fancy wings, or you could even make one that supports your favourite sports team.
Once you’ve made your butterfly, you can pop it into your indoor garden and please take picture and send it to us via facebook, we would love to see how creative you can be.
