Getting Crafty – Monster Bookmarks

Hello! And welcome back to Getting Crafty with Citadel Arts.

I have to admit I am a bit of a bookworm.  I love reading and have always got a book or two that I’m reading on the go, but I don’t have any bookmarks and am always losing my place in a book.  So today we’re going to solve that problem by making some Monster Bookmarks.

For this task you are going to need:

1 x square of coloured paper

1 x piece of white paper

Small piece of red card

Glue Stick

2 x googly eyes or draw your own eyes onto white paper and cut out.

Have a watch of the video below and follow the step by step guide to have a go at creating your own.

We’d love to see all of your amazing creations when you’ve finished so please upload a picture to our facebook page.

Take your square of coloured paper and turn it so it makes a diamond shape.  Fold this in half bringing the top and bottom corners together, fold it neatly and create a crease along the fold.

Take the corner on the right and fold it to meet the top corner. Repeat this process with the left corner, folding it to meet the top corner.  Make sure your folds and creases are neat.

Open this back up so we have a triangle again.  And from the top corner fold the flap down so that the top corner meets the bottom of the triangle.

Fold the bottom right corner up and tuck it behind the flap that we have just created.

Fold the bottom left corner up and tuck it behind the flap we have created.

Now we have our basic bookmark shape we need to give it a monstrous face.  Take your piece of white paper and cut a small strip from it.  Hold this against your bookmark to measure how wide you need to cut it.  This is going to create the teeth and will sit inside our monster’s mouth.

Using your scissors cut out the shape of teeth from your piece of paper.  Make sure you don’t cut right through the paper.

Glue along the top strip of your monster teeth and stick to the upper lip of your monster bookmark.

Take your piece of red card and draw the shape of the tongue you would like your monster to have.  Then use your scissors to cut it out.

Dab some glue to the top of your monster tongue and stick firmly into place on the upper lip of your monster bookmark.

Now it’s time to finish off our monster book mark by giving him some eyes.  If you don’t have googly eyes, just draw some eyes on to white paper and cut them out.  Apply a small amount of glue to you monster bookmark and stick your monster eyes on, holding firmly so they stay in place.

Now you’ve finished you can pop in to the corner of the page in the book that you’re reading and you’ll never lose your place again.

Take a photo of your creation and upload it to the Citadel Arts facebook page.

Now you’ve created one, why stop there? You could create other types of monster bookmarks, or, while it’s nearly Easter creating a bunny bookmark, or even make a magical unicorn bookmark.  You can be as creative as you want.

We hope you enjoyed this activity.  Thank you for getting crafty with Citadel Arts.
